About Us

Our Mission

Providing support and assistance to low-income women, children, men, and their pets in the greater Chicago area.

We are proud to be a Chicago-based organization. Among the many things that make our city area so special is our strong sense of community. We believe that all of our neighbors and fellow Chicagoans should receive respect, have access to any support they may need, and enjoy a sense of security. Unfortunately, some of our neighbors face more obstacles in obtaining these things than others. We are here to help enable them to overcome and thrive.

Our Story

Formerly known as The Women’s Treatment Center and TWTC, Windy City Cares started in 1990 as a unique drug treatment program for women trying to overcome addictions. We operated a center in Chicago’s West Loop providing residential care for women while also offering out-patient methadone treatment to individuals working to overcome opioid addictions.

The center also welcomed the children of its patients and provided support through parenting classes, a 24-hour nursery, and partnered with the Chicago Public School to start a preschool and day care. This allowed for the women at our center to focus on their recovery without separating families.

Sadly, in 2021, after the state transitioned to a managed care model, slower payments, and the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, it was decided to close the building. The center helped place all of its residents and out-patients in other programs that could continue their support.

However, we knew that there was still work to be done, and we realigned our mission to serve low-income women, children, men, and their four-legged friends. In July 2024, we renamed our organization to Windy City Cares to better reflect the work that we do.
